Vocaloid cosplay is easy to pull off nowadays because of the number of costume and contact lens shops offering Vocaloid stuff. Miku Hatsune, Ren and Len Kagamine, Luka Megurine, and other characters of the ultra popular singing synthesizer franchise are all easy to cosplay if you know where to look online.
Ever since Vocaloid garnered wide acclaim after making it big on the Japanese video streaming website Nico Nico Douga, we have seen a slew of amazing Vocaloid cosplayers from all over the world. Of course, there are sub-par ones as well, but the better costumers are a sight to behold.
Hatsune Miku being the face and character most fans associate with when they think of Vocaloid, it is perhaps the one that also has been portrayed more than any other. There are literally hundreds of thousands of Hatsune Miku cosplayers that you can find online, some of them extremely faithful to the blue-haired leek-spinner, others adding their own creative personal touch. When looking for a good cosplayer, you always have to note the eyes – outstanding Mikus have just the right shade of cosplay contact lenses. After all, even the tiniest details matter when you want to honor the character you’re cosplaying as.
Even if I show you a dozen of pics here, we will never come close to the gist of the phenomenon that is Vocaloid cosplay. Instead, let me show you my favorite Miku Hatsune rendition. It’s by a girl who calls herself NECOCO.
One of the best characters to come out of Vocaloid is none other than Black Rock Shooter, a product of a fan-made illustration that shot its way to stardom when it was coupled with a rocking soundtrack that was another major Nico Nico Douga hit. Whether you like BRS for its stylish design or the music that came with it, you’ll definitely love the cosplayers who bring BRS to life.
Easily the best Black Rock Shooter cosplayer around has to be Saya, a gorgeous lady who happens to be in awesome pictures as well. Unfortunately, Saya is dead now after an untimely accident, but her cosplay works will surely stand through the test of time. See for yourself:
Beyond these two, the number of Vocaloid characters that have been in cosplay form is staggering. You’ll have to be familiar with the franchise itself for you to know where to start looking. The Kagamines are a popular choice, then there are other names we have mentioned and their drag queen and fan-made versions.
If you want to try them for yourself, always remember that details are of utmost priority. Before you nail down the character’s personality and nuances, you should at least have the costume down pat. This includes having the right fabric, perfect craftsmanship, and the best cosplay contact lenses to go with your particular outfit. When you’re confident about your costume, it’s time to try some poses that should be appropriate and in-character. Nothing ruins a fantasy more than a Hatsune Miku or BRS acting weird.
