An interesting question. Permit me to answer it this way: on my computer I have as my wallpaper a copy of Van Gogh’s Cafe Terrace At Night (http://www.chinaoilpaintinggallery.com/oilpainting/Vincent-van-Gogh/The-Cafe-Terrace-on-the-Place-du-Forum-Arles-at-Night.jpg). I chose it as my wallpaper because it has qualities that dearly appeal to me.
Does it diminish the original painting or make it any less notable because I have a copy? I would say it does not. Without wishing to sound immodest, I feel that having a copy of Cafe Terrace At Night actually compliments and complements the singular worth of the original since it allows the beauty and joy that the artist put into the painting during its creation to be shared with other people, be they only one or two who also like that particular painting.

The small audience of that sort of art cannot be compared to the audience and of something like cosplay. Even now, paintings like that are appreciated by a minority and take a certain kind of taste/understanding for someone to find the value and beauty in it. However, do try to imagine it: people randomly using and spreading that one artwork in a non-tasteful, casual, stupid and in a ‘because its a fad’ manner without even appreciating the painting as it is and what it contains, without seeing and understanding ‘the beauty and joy that the artist put into the painting’ as you have said, how would it make you feel?

Cafe Terrace At Night remains unique and perhaps even rare to me not because only a few appreciate it but because my experience of it is my own. Certainly there may be other people who see and understand the painting as I do but the degree or perspective of their insight and understanding may still differ (however slightly) from mine. In which case, though we see the same artwork, the experience that each of us derives from it is is individually our own.
And if, say, Starbucks was to use Cafe Terrace for a promotional campaign? Or if I were to see a copy being sold at a bazaar in Malate? I would honestly be more amused than anything else.

well, myrtle and I go to the same university. and i don’t really know if the words “nice” and “shy” are fitted for someone as bossy and boastful as she is.
she was once a friend of my room mate, and she told me that they went out one time. they had lunch at a fast-food resto in SM and when they were about to order their meals, myrtle just put her cash on the table and told my room mate to order anything for her because she was tired and there was this long line, when in fact, they were all tired. how bossy can she get? way more bossier.
after lunch, they decided to go on window-shopping. her friends can’t even enter a certain boutique that they like because myrtle barges in anywhere she likes and they don’t have a choice but to follow her.
she also had a crush on someone at school too. when she knew who that guy’s ex-gf was, she criticized her immediately. when she saw that girl in one of our universities facilities, she bluntly said in a loud voice to her friends: “Is she it? is she really the girl. She’s not pretty at all.”

@Another White Knight, if I were offered to be in PBB, I wouldn’t even consider it. I, and the rest of my family, my mom especially, considers it an “exploitation of human rights and personal privacy”–I quote my mom on that. Asking the housemates to do mundane tasks which housemates are more or less forced to do, because of fame or money or winning or something.
Some tasks are for the benefit of this and that, pero kung yun ang desire mo, exagg naman kung gagawa ka pa ng absurd task for it when in real life you can simply help your community, volunteer for an organization, or donate to your favorite charity. I’m not sure how many kids and teens realize how simple it is to do that.
Myrtle joining PBB is not something I judge. It’s her choice so frankly I-don’t-care. What everyone’s discussing here is how it will affect the cosplay community, because this will definitely market and publicize and sell cosplay via mainstream TV. Simply put, media is going to end up selling cosplay as a product. People have concerns about that over here.
So here’s to you from someone who is not “so judgmental and jealous” at “pag binigyan din nang offer sa PBB tatanggapin nyo naman din”.

The show can really bring a nasty violation of human rights and privacy as you say. Talagang buong buhay mo mapapakita for people to laud and bash. SInce the first season, pinapanood ko na ang PBB, at may napansin ako, nahahalata ko na ang iba ay plastik , may nagmamalinis at may nagmamagaling, di na mawawala sa community ang ganyan. Nung narinig ko na “Cosplayer ng Ilo-Ilo” , napataas agad ang kilay ko, alam ko na si myrtle na ito kasi galing din akong ilo-ilo, and nakikita ko siya sa hero (ung interview sa kanya) na paulit-ulit na pinapakita noon at binabanggit ung term na “Top Cosplayer coming from Ilo-Ilo”, also means na matagal na ung title na yun, long before she even auditioned.
I dont really care about her joining, fixed man ung slot sa pbb o luck yun, wala na kong pake, makikita naman din natin ung totoo niyang pagkatao. Except kung magaling talagang magpanggap yung tao. Wag na nating ikumpara siya kay Alodia , Im not a fan of myrtle pero para sakin mas ok pa si myrtle kesa sa so-called “Goddess of Cosplay”. @Blitz: Ikr… they have nothing else to offer, yes meron silang mga “bagong” show pero lahat pinaglumaan animax at ng mga local networks. Zettai Karen Children and Needless was so-so tome, and the dubbing of gundam 00 OMFGit was horrible and the way the narrator of the preview can’t even pronounce the show title properly, the way he pronounce is this, “Susunod sa Gundam 00 Mobile Suit” everytime i hear that I can’t help myself to facepalm. Animax is awesome minus Alodia, I wish that they return Music Station, show more of Animax Musix concert series and more awesome Anime either if its sameday telecast from japan or not.

I watch Hero and I noticed few things, aside from some wrong choice of dubbers, they also have wrong choices of words(especially in translations) and I find it very irritating to see some segments or things that doesnt really fit or if it does, it’s not that great/good xD.Well, people will comment/say that “Not all are perfect” , let’s just let them be, not our problem if they make mistakes xD.
Also, Animax used to be great, although there are some anime who uses the same dubber xD , and also, the subtitles helps specially to people who had hearing problems (like me xDD) , although I cant help to admit that the Alodia/Ani-mate(Good thing Ani-mate commercials are gone except for Alodia’s XD) are quite irritating (for me) xDD, already saw them hundreds of times yet at least 3 appearances a day isnt enough for them, they take at least 2-3 appearances every 2 hours xDDD

Alexx Agcaoili helmed the 00 dub (god forbid Hero works on A Wakening of the Trailblazer and he leads that). I couldn’t compare that with what was done sa Wing, G, and X over a decade ago sa Channel 7 – not that the dub on those three were better. Tagalog-subbed series or any Japanese live-action flicks on Hero are not tickling my fancy.
I couldn’t understand why Animax had to include dubbed Knovelas at some point. Hindi tumatak sakin yung papel ng Sisters or Stephanie Henares.

Degochi, I was referring to a Tagalog dub of the 00 movie but the quality of the dialogue turns out to be just as shitty like what was done sa series mismo. May pagka-meh din yung SEED and Destiny dubs. Kung matigas ang apog nila try working the Universal Century timeline.

Seems like I heard her name before since I was once appreciate cosplayers. When I first saw her on TV, I was flabbergasted when I heard she was from UP and an accountancy student. Why does she have to high light what university she came from? and even her course/profession? I mean, who cares? To brag it to the public? You see, almost all of the housemates doesn’t state which school they came. Also, she’s not pretty nor beautiful. I peeked her Facebook page which garnered thousands of likers. Lot’s of people adored and idolized her. Also, lots of my friends likes her and even boys fell in love with her. I started to view her pictures on her fan page and all I see was her face caked with too much make up and giant lenses, it’s unusual. Her lenses are so big, not normal, she looks like a dog. I was looking for at least even one picture of her without any make up, lenses and not wearing weird costumes and there’s none. Her tagged pictures are private. She must have been rich and I guess she can’t do the chores.

Well “in fairness” it’s the staff of the Pinoy Big Brother Franchise and specifically, those that really wanted her to become a housemate that we should be blaming first.

My guy friends were all like: “OMFG, I WANNA SCREW HER, SHE LOOKS SO PRETTY AND SHIT.” from day 1, she became their instant favorite among the housemates just because she was a cosplayer.
Shortly after PBB began, my 14-year old friend on FB uploaded cellphone pictures of herself wearing polo, skirt, cat ears and an apron and said that she was “cosplaying” as a maid. She said she was inspired by Alodia and Myrtle. Patong-patong na damit = cosplay. Nice.

it’s so sad to see these things in cosplay.. i remember when i went home here in the philippines with my filipino dad he enrolled me in my new school, when my new friends met me they added me in friendster(yah friendster was the “in” social thing before)they saw my pictures when i was in shibuya and they were like ” cosplay? you do that in japan? thats cute” but after a month some of my friends told me that some of our schoolmates are starting to cosplay and they were told by those new cosplayers that it was because of that popular guy in school who commented in my pictures but before i posted my pictures he already started courting me. sorry i didnt accepted the guy’s courtship i dnt feel anything for himsorry -_- i told my friends “are you sure its JUST because of that? they are using cosplay for flirty stuff? they misunderstood everything” at first i wasn’t convinced until i gradualy observed it with my own eyes.. so sad to see that girls are now using cosplay just because they see that guys are attracted to fancy clothes and weird poses, to their over-photoshopped pictures and girls wearing huge lenses.. -_- i have stopped cosplaying since 2007 because of the changing image of cosplay here. dont they know that those guys dont like them for what they are but just because of those wigs and dresses? i have seen a failed relationship about that before, my schoolmate who’s a year younger than me was courted by this guy who keeps saying “wow, you cosplay(pertaining to my schoolmate)thats cool, i like you” something like that, all of us in our club(student org)are witnessing their relationship, they became an official couple within months and they broke up (i think after just a few weeks) the girl told us its the guy who dumped her, she said the guy is starting to lose interest with her. she said the guy started to stop texting and seeing her after she was seen without make up.. gosh.. in my mind i want to comfort her but i also feel like it was her fault too coz he didnt show off herself without make up and she shouldn’t have bragged about cosplay.. our club member asked her if she was sure of the reason and she said its true coz when she asked his ex if he likes someone else, his ex confirmed it and when she asked the reason why and why not her, her ex replied “you’re different from each other.. she’s pretty without make up” all of us were shocked that the guy can say that to her.. i know all guys aren’t as mean as his ex, but the reason why i posted this LONG—– comment is for this girls to realize that cosplay and make up is not the key to be famous, to get a guy, to be loved, etc. if a guy really likes and loves you, it should NOT be because of your hobby, accessories, fahion, make up etc. those broad-minded people who have written the truth in this page have seen this reality too, when i saw those people’s comment of cosplay being brought down in a wrong perspective, my faith in humanity was restored that there are still people who use their minds and are very observant, people who aren’t dummies of media and aren’t worshippers of HUMANS who proclaim themselves as some sort of a SUPERIOR in the field(a queen, princess, master, deity, goddess, hmm whatever bragger-title it is)i hope all the young girls who are planning to use cosplay for attention will realize this and please take care of yourself, dont bring yourselves in a low level, girls you are all BEAUTIFUL without the need of imitating sailormoon, tifa lockheart, haruhi etc. cosplay is an art, hobby and should only be used in appropriate aspects.
