While all the losers and their mothers worship Alodia, there is someone who is truly worthy of such titles as “Geek Goddess” or “Otaku Goddess”. She doesn’t have to act like an idiot to do it, and her career isn’t a flavor of the month kind of deal.
Enter Mayu Watanabe, a long-time member of Japanese super idol group AKB48 and the kind of 3D girl otaku would worship. She doesn’t really impress me as a performer, being the overly cutesy type largely due to her voice, but I guess the 150,000 (impressive number that almost took the number 1 spot in Oricon’s weekly chart) people who bought her single would digress.
Mayuyu singing her single, Synchro Tokimeki
Mayuyu is packaged by the AKB48 management as an otaku (I suppose the right term would be fujoshi) who publicly states she’s only interested in anime men. Whether or not this is just her “idol character” is up for debate, but she does a consistently convincing job at the portrayal. Not to mention, she can actually draw manga and anime characters, which is rather difficult to fake.
In the video below, she claims to have bought an anime-related CD instead of the newly released one by her fellow members.
In the next video, her “private life” is shown and she spends the day doing all sorts of otaku things, such as dining in a host club and taking purikura pictures while dressed up.
As an added bonus, she actually looks good beside Airi Suzuki! They’re a few weeks apart in age, though Airi is clearly the more experienced idol, as you will see below.

there had been reports that creepy otaku buy AKB48′s albums in bulk…. as in hundreds of CDs are bought by each otaku — to get (by chance) a “ticket for a handshake” so it’s just natural that they get plenty of sales.

Kaya di ko talaga masabi na otaku ako eh.
Tapos malalaman kong may mga otaku posers na ngayon.

the only way to prove na otaku na talaga is to turn as an otaku – from japan.. I remember some articles on SanCom that otakus are really disturbing

it’s not by chance actually, for every release there is a certain percentage of CDs for preorder that are termed “limited editions” that have handshake tickets. only these have such handshake tickets and they are present in each limited edition CD preordered.
the non pre-order versions do not have the said tickets.
also AKB48 is not the only group selling multiple versions of CDs to get a large number of sales, the same goes for almost every idol group out there: H!P, Super Girls, Momoiro Clover Z, Tokyo Girls Style, etc.
the only difference with AKB48 is that for every single they released since 2009′s “Iiwake Maybe”, the sales got higher per subsequent single which means they are getting more and more fans.
given the sorry state of Japan’s economy, it would be impossible to say that fans are getting richer every single release from AKB.

Yeah, what about her? I mean, eating cats and playing a lot of video games should net her an award.

Mayu is really an anime otaku, there has been a lot of documentaries and shows that already cover her otaku tastes.
the 2nd video should have an english sub somewhere. it’s a show where they show what typically an AKB48 member does during their day off. so they send a camera man following them all day long. the tv only shows 600 seconds (or 10 mins of it) while the mini-SD card that can be bought has 5400 minutes of coverage that were not shown on tv. at this show, the camera man is not supposed to interact with the girls and just let the girls do what they want to do.
anyway at the last restaurant they are in, Nacchan (the girl with Mayu) commented something about being curious about men’s chest hairs whereby Mayu suddenly blurted out she doesn’t want to listen or discuss “3D” men and only wants to talk about “2D” men.

Let’s not hope that Ms. Watanabe isn’t doing this for show and profit… The stigma on otaku in Japan is just unbearable, and she could maybe change that.

actually the phrase should be “Mayuyu The True Wota Goddess”
Otakus and Wota dislike each other with a passion. Wota (Idol Otakus who prefer 3D girls) created the same word “wota” to distinguish themselves from the usual Otakus (Anime Otakus to be specific, those who prefer 2D girls)
Otakus will only like 3D girls if they are professional seiyuus like in the case of Aya Hirano and others – as Otakus have a general distrust of 3D women.
just a note: articles coming from sankakucomplex are sketchy at best and do not distinguish which otaku are they referring to (idol otaku or anime otaku). including also they do not get their stories right (it was S/Mileage that got handshaked by fans with body liquids in their palms and not AKB48. it is a must in AKB48 handshakes that fans must use alcohol prior to shaking hands)

Oh, Sankaku. Meh. It’s the Lourd de Veyra of Japanese culture, spewing nothing but needless hate.
About the clorox-scented S/Mileage handshakes… May I ask who actually received it?

Finally! A real person. A REAL OTAKU! One that doesn’t act like an attention-seeker and/or famewhore. She is now one on my list of people to look up to <3
