Maid cafes bring up the moral question – is it subtle prostitution? Does it contribute to the degradation of the serving maids who learn that offering their “services” can lead to substantial financial gain? Do maid cafes really breed sorry losers who’d go as far as pay money for woman companionship that they are otherwise unable to acquire? Is it ok for underage girls to satisfy those who fetish over maids?
I was in a heated debate about this and it ended up going nowhere. You people do the rest.

Epic Mike Abundo!
On Topic: I was thinking about it and my answer to those questions are, yes indeed. On specifics, yes, it is prostitution. Yes, that is why they are called maids(katulong, female servant, chimay). Not all people who pay to go in at maid cafes are sorry losers, there are also people who go there because they are rich and hungry, or thirsty, and lazy to go to the venue's food court or the food stand or establishment near the event. But yes, majority of those who are costumers at maid cafes are sorry losers, either rich or saved up their cash just to go in. Yes, it is ok for underage girls to satisfy those who fetish over maids(kesa naman si inday ang patulan mo ser diba?). They(maids) do not think of themselves as underage anyway(most probably).

subtle prostitution? HA? LOL.
as long as they're not having any sex or doing sexual favors with any of the customers then it's not prostitution.

about the Maids? well yea. most of them are underage. and they sell Cereals, (i had 4 already, and now i have a bad stomach)
BTW: some cosplayers boycotted the event (2 days in a row)
FIRST DAY: only 2 cosplayers registered at the catwalk . so they cancelled it.
SECOND DAY. they all went outside. . according to my source, they do not want to spend 100pesos for entrance, then ang eexpect lang nila is another fees. like pag benta sayo ng items with their cuteness.
MEGATRADE HALL 1 was opened for the public FOR FREE, MAS MALAMIG, MAS MALAKI, MAS MALIWANAG.
dun naganap ang karamihan na shoots.
When i came back to megatrade hall 2 (where the real event was)
ang pinapatugtog is mga kanta ni Francis M, at mga RAP.
na like. WTF? is this really related?
so yea.

MY DEFENSE:
MASARAP UNG CERIAL at naka apat na ko sa sobrang sarap!
para sakin sulit naman ung price kasi they serve with a SMILE naman :]
what i do not understand is. may Shake don na tinitinda for 60PESOS! mas mahal pa sa Zagu.
sana sa next event nila mas maging maayos. mas mabigyan priority din ang mga shops. kasi un ang kadalasan pinupuntahan (pansin ko nasa sulok lang cla siksikan
at sana. ung stage. mas maraming activities.
Boring ung quiz bee nila. (mejo nakaka OP ofcourse)
lets just give them a chance! ok naman eh :]
kasi kung hindi ka rin interesado at magiging negative mashado. hindi mo rin ma eenjoy.

actually i was informed that maid cafes in japan is a way to sell sex, i dont know how much of this is true coz i haven't been there before but yea i kinda agree to this.
back in the Victorian Era i think maids and butlers are noble servants, i think maid cafes should transform to something wholesome, instread of maids acting like naive girls they should act more noble and decent, knowing the limitations of the "services" they give to "masters/mistresses"

I think that maid cafés are places of subtle prostitution indeed even though body contact is prohibited. But the maids’ behaviour obviously deals with sensuality.I agree with Dorian Gray by telling some customers go there because they are hungry or thursty but During my stay,I entered a maid café (without really knowing what I would find there as I am not used to the Japanese culture)and I felt uncomfortable by noticing the way most of the men were looking at the maids. For speaking frankly,I didn’t have the impression I was in a respectable place.

.I went to a maid café in Tokyo and I can tell that even though there is no sexual contact between maids and customers, everything in the maids’ behaviour deals with prostitution. Nothing is innocent behind all this and everyone knows that in Japan.

You are right Martin.
I am a half Italian half Japanese boy and I feel ashamed of this part of the Japanese culture. I went to a maid café a few years ago ,thinking maid cafés were just entertainment, but the funny aspect hides a far more sordid reality. The Japanese like to fantasize on very young girls in maid costumes. They go to the maid cafés like others read pornographic magazines.I remember a man sitting on the table next to mine who was watching the maids while discreetly masturbating…
In Japan, it is forbidden for a girl under the age of 29 to work as a hostess. The entertaining appearance of maid cafes makes it possible to trick the law to hire far much younger girls. It is true that some maid cafés for tourists remain acceptable (and yet…) but overall the maid cafes are not respectable places even though body contact is prohibited.Weird places for weird people…

Let me tell you about my experience with maid cafés…
I went to Tokyo with some of my classmates in 2008 and we went to a maid café as we thought such places had to do with the manga culture .In this maid café,it was possible to talk to a maid during half an hour and I wanted to improve my level so I asked to have a conversation with one of the maids. She took me in a small room isolated from the café by a curtain and then we started to talk.I asked questions about the Japanese culture but the maid answered by guiding the conversation on erotic topics. At a time,I noticed she was sitting in such a way that I could see her underpants. In the end,she told me I was really cool and nice and that she wanted to meet me again …at the café. I had the impression she did everything she could to make me come back and spend all my money. Some people can think maid cafés are funny,I think these are places which deal with subtle prostitution
like no-pan kissa…My interest in Japan ended that day.

No jacking off guys !!!
Kidding aside ,if maids cafés are nothing but intetainment, well ,ok! But for adults only ! To me,the weird part is to pretend this is just intertainment and that everyone can go there . Imagine you take your kids there !!! Is that a show for children? Hey,who would pretend going there just to enjoy food and drinks when they are brought by sexy girls wearing extra sexy costumes !!!
Of course, this is subtle prostitution !
If this is the only way for some to “have fun”,why not ! But at least ,don’t trick people by telling such places are respectable ! They are not !All the more that as Martin wrote, everyone knows that in Japan !

I just want to say that all the cultures have bad aspects and that prostitution and porn is obviously the main one in the Japanese culture .Saddening but true .I don’t want to support this .As Mariko said,it is ambiguous, and it is why it is so difficult to see the truth hidden behind pinkness !But the Italians can behave badly too ! Misconduct is not the privilege of Japan !

Mimikaki :ear cleaning. Customers raise their head on the lap of a beautiful woman.
No “sexual contact”,but when ones knows the ears are erogenous zones and that the hostess is always cute …one can easily guess there is something ambiguous behind a seemingly innocuous act…like behind everything in Japan

Yes,Japan kills innocence in the name of entertainment
Prostitution is prohibited in Japan, but only when there is penetration . It means massages and oral sex are tolerated as “services”.
What upsets me is not the fact maid cafes exist. It is the fact they are presented as something normal there is no need to hide. It is the fact the girls are young and that I cannot stand this idea that in Japan,a woman over 25 is old and that only the girls under 18 are cute and worthy of being watched .And the extreme sexualization of everything related to childhood is spooky. It is a gateway to pedophilia. It is important people realize the maid cafés are not that innocent despite the funny aspect of some.Everybody knows but nobody does anything. The market of sensuality is more flourishing than ever, and at the same time,Japanese couples are mostly drifting because very early ,young men are taught that pleasure must be find away from home.A wife brings social status, and that’s all ! Many Japanese couples stop having sexual intercourse after a few years and the husband prefers the stupidity of the maids or the hardness and coldness of a scrubbing ears to the warm arms of his wife ! I am definitely 100% Italian ! I rejects the Japanese lifestyle and especially all that has to do with maid cafes and Japanese views about sensuality . I rejects this way of life which leads people to overwork,to overdo, and to consider human beings as objects we put in the trash when they are no longer effective.I cannot change my Japanese roots but in matter of culture ,I am an Italian !

I am Japanese and worked in maid café 2008-2010 in MaiDreamin Akihabara . Maids are said they must serve everyone very well .But also said “tease the men to make money”.It is subtle prostitution. And yes,we know why the men like so much going to maid café.Some tourists (men) almost visit us everyday. And otaku spend their lifes and money at maid café. Maid café : 100% pink and 0% morality .

You are welcome Dema . I guess all the girls don’t realize when they work at maid cafes, the impact of clothes and acting . No sexual contact,of course, and this is true .But many other ways to tease men .Some girls believe it just a game and role they play .But in the mind of many otaku,it is much more than innocent game .Some spend money and money ! I remember a ugly small blond boy, perhaps in 2009 coming from Scandinavia .He probably spent almost all his money with the maids, taking pics (even with the landlady !!!). It was sad to see that .He thought we would love him ! We were just here to make him pay more more .

I wrote “Scandinavian boy” but should write Scandinavian man because he was probably 30-35 years old fat man .I remember this one because he wanted a pic with the landlady too,and it is unusual. Sometimes he visited the maid café with some of his friends and also made friend with Japanese customers because he could speak a little Japanese. He was nothing but a pathetic man believing he would date one of the maids.Desesperately looking for a little tenderness. Usually, the tourists are kind and funny and just visit the maid cafes with good intents . Many tourists use to visit the maid cafe I was working at. No danger with the tourists .But some otaku can really be obsessive and scary and sometimes the waitresses feel uncomfortable because of the way some otaku look at them .Some maid cafes offer hand massages or love poker (possible to undress the maid )and some otaku loose their mind and sometimes are fired by the owner because of misconduct .One of the waitresses was followed by a customer for months . Nothing happened but spooky. Some otaku cannot tell dream from reality:dangerous .And when they see a ketchup- heart on their plate, they believe the maid is in love with them. And the maid draws the heart to tease the man and for him to pay more more .No feeling .
I believe it is bad to encourage such behaviours and such thoughts .Otaku must go back to real normal life and maid cafe should stop with ambiguity .Because all is ambiguity there .It is what makes it so hard to tell if this is good or bad, entertainment or prostitution. One cannot endlessly play with ambiguity without playing with danger .
I feared many times and felt uncomfortable too many times to encourage anyone working as a maid . And the maid cafe I was working at was not the weirdest one yet.

At this time,I was little stupid.Didn’t realize how bad it was because bad is hidden behind pinkness. It is pathetic indeed to see customers coming back again again,to watch girls wearing stupid clothes and sometimes acting like trisomics. And many customers are over 30! I still wonder what kind interest people over 30 can find in maid cafes if this is not a part of pedophilia. Some made cafe can look nice, but the “hidden meaning “is present yet .Not as innocent as it looks .And everyone knows but is hypocrit enough to say it is just “cute”.One can hide many weird things behind pink walls.

subtle prostitution? yes.
the problem here is that…
well ganito na lang masasabi ko, as in konti lang ang tao nakakaalam kung ano talaga purpose ng Maid Cafe, and there some anime series shows that Maid Cafe is only an ordinary cafe with waitresses wearing a maid outfit
- its like a semi-trap for the peeps who want to go to Japan to experience Maid Cafes.
Now I remember the MeidoCafe / MeidoDolls? (whatever) closed some months ago, well I guess marami ren nagising :)) Now I realize kung bakit some of the maids are really good looking, customers don’t care about the food prices as long as magaganda sila okay na un.

Maid cafe :no physical contact with the maids except hand massage in some maid cafes . Maid café is like no pan kissa. People can just watch the maids and fantasize on the maids .The behaviour of the maids is made to tease the men because all the occasions are good to let the customers see our underpants when we dance or when we play games. We must not pull our dress to make it longer when we dance and let customers see our underpants during a second or two. It is enough to tease some men and to make them pay again again for more dances and songs . And the difference is also the age of the maids. In Japan, real hostesses must be over 29 .Maids are 20 to the more. Many Japanese men prefer no sexual contact and watching very young girls than something obviously sensual with a woman .
It is the same with no- pan kissa ノーパン喫茶 in which there is no sexual contact but the waitresses don’t wear underwears under mini skirts . Some people still pretend this is entertainment …

Dave, Martin, Mariko, and Kenji’s posts are quite insightful. Now, I have never really gotten into a maid cafe as of yet, but judging from their posts (and some from *cough*sancon*cough*), they’re probably more spot-on than we think. I refuse to really comment on our local con maid cafes, maybe except for that one time I felt like questioning their menu (which made my friend abort plans in the first place)

Subtle irony aside,
For girls, it gives a cute atmosphere and helps make estrogen flow~~ but I does kinda provide a type of prostitution. Butler cafe’s as well.I have been to places that look family friendly, but the waitresses are all sexy ladies in short skirts and tights. The rumor is that that place is where sugar daddies go to pick up girls….*shrugs* kaichou wa maid-sama was fun

Think maid cafes could have been nice places if there was no ambiguity .Have been a maid myself and know what I am talking about .
If maid cafes were nice places,no need for rules telling don’t touch the maids,,don’t ask a maid phone number etc…
The rules should be “no man over 30″,just families and bands of friends .The costumes we use to wear should be a little more decent.
People don’t feel comfortable when see men sitting in kindergardens watching children playing. Why do they let lonely men over 30
watching babydoll- girls for hours in maid cafes? Not healthy for the mind. Many maids told the owners of maid cafe about sexual harrasment because of otaku misconduct .Owners say “don’t tell”:not good for the cafe.
