“The grapes are fantastic because they are not only accessible, but they are multifaceted,” nutritionist Anthony Dimarino told the Cleveland clinic. “They can be used in many different dishes and situations.”
An electric house of nutrients and antioxidants, there are many reasons for this delicious fruit – which some call “candy of nature” – is so grapes for you.
Cancer prevention
The grapes are distinguished by the fact that there are over 1600 different plant compounds, many of which contain an incredible set of antioxidants.
For example, anthocyanins are responsible for giving red grapes to their rich hue – and they also fight free radicals that can damage cells and lead to cancer.
The skin and seeds of the red grapes are particularly rich in resveratrol – which is known to reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.
Resveratrol is also present in red wine-but as there is currently a significant doubt as to whether the content of axioxidants really compensates for the effects of cancer causing alcohol, it is probably better with a handful of grapes.
A study published in the Nutrition Journal found that adults over 50 that ate 150 to 450 grams of grapes daily for two weeks show a decrease in signs of colon cancer.
Studies have also shown that grape extracts can inhibit the growth and spread of breast and colon cells in laboratory conditions and animal studies.

Heart health
“The grapes are very low in sodium,” Dimarino said. “They fit well with a dietary plan with low sodium, helping to reduce blood pressure.”
They also contain a lot of potassium – which can help regulate your blood sugar levels – and polyphenols, in particular resveratrol, which have been shown to reduce blood pressure, lower bad cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
A 2015 study found that people with high cholesterol who ate three glasses of red grapes a day had lower levels of total cholesterol and bad cholesterol at the end of the 8-week test.
“I always explain it almost like a street cleaner,” Dimarino said. “It enters your blood and carries all this cholesterol from the body in the liver where it is processed.”
Brain
Studies show that grapes can boost your brain’s health.
A 2017 study showed that adults receiving a grape supplement of 250 mg every day for 12 weeks showed significant improvements in language skills, memory and concentration.
In another 2017 study, younger adults consuming 230 ml of grape juice were able to complete memory tasks faster and seemed to be in better moods in just 20 minutes.
Studies suggest that the properties of free radicals of resveratrol can also protect you from dementia and cognitive decline.
“Think about Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, these can be signs of oxidative stress,” Dimarino said. “Resveratrol can help reduce the chances of these diseases.”

Struggle with aging
This powerful antioxidant – resveratrol – can just keep your skin look as fresh and full as a handful of grapes immediately from the vine, reducing cellular damage.
“It helps to protect certain genes, leading to healthy aging and longevity,” Dimarino said.
Improves sleep
You may have heard that melatonin can help you sleep-you don’t need to take supplements to get a dose of this naturally occurring hormone.
You can just pick up a handful of grapes-especially after they double as a delicious dessert after dinner for weight.
“The grapes have a degree of melatonin in them,” Dimarino said. “So they are a great evening breakfast. They don’t have many calories and can potentially help you fall asleep.”
