TThe last day to file your taxes is quickly approaching. As such, you can be curious about whether you are eligible to extend the tax and how you will deal with one. The January news from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says that “over half of all tax returns are expected to be submitted this year with the help of a tax specialist.” IRS also urged people to once again use “a reliable tax professional to avoid potential fraud and schemes.”

For those who have not yet filed their taxes, here’s what you need to know about the 2025 tax period and how to apply for an extension.

Usually, the deadline for taxes for this year is April 15th – a US Tax Day, which falls on Tuesday in 2025.

Although the deadline is April 15, in January IRS predicts that over 140 million individual tax returns for the 2024 tax return will be filed before the deadline.

As of April 4, the IRS has already received 101 422 000 individual declarations on income tax tax in 2025.

Natural disasters have affected US citizens across the country over the past year – from fires in Los Angeles, to hurricanes in Florida and North Carolina, for floods in New York.

Disaster victims in twelve countries have automatic extensions for filing and paying their taxes since 2024. Although some of these extensions apply only to certain populations in these countries.

According to IRS, for the victims of wild fire in California, “these taxpayers already have until October 15, 2025, to submit various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.

For the victims of Hurricane Helen and Hurricane Milton in various states, including Western Virginia, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina – and parts of Tennessee and Virginia – the deadlines have been extended until May 1, 2025 to submit to the fiscal 2024.

Other areas that are eligible for extension on May 1 due to disaster relief include Juno in Alaska and Chavez County in New Mexico, while those affected by the hard time in Kentucky now have to submit different federal and tax returns and make tax payments.

If you are not sure if you are eligible to extend the state, IRS has a page specifically dedicated to news in any country where taxpayers can join the state or countries, they will file taxes to see if there is a fun deadline.
